HBO Max Device Limits Explained

Wondering how many people can use your Max account at once? Here's the complete breakdown.

Current Max Plans (2024)

Max offers three subscription tiers with different streaming limits:

PlanSimultaneous StreamsPrice
With Ads2 devices$9.99/mo
Ad-Free2 devices$15.99/mo
Ultimate Ad-Free4 devices$19.99/mo

What "Simultaneous Streams" Means

This is the number of devices that can actively watch at the same time.

Example with 2 streams:

  • Person A watches on living room TV ✓
  • Person B watches on their phone ✓
  • Person C tries to watch → Gets an error ✗

But:
  • Person A pauses and walks away → Stream eventually times out
  • Person C can now watch ✓

Device Registration Limits

Beyond simultaneous streams, there are limits on registered devices:

  • Max registered devices: 5 per account (on most plans)
  • Changing devices: You can remove devices from your account settings
  • How to manage: Max.com > Profile > Devices > Manage

Downloads for Offline Viewing

The Ultimate Ad-Free plan includes:

  • 100 downloads across account
  • Downloads on up to 5 devices
  • 30-day expiration on downloads

Other plans don't include download features.

Supported Devices

Max works on:

  • Mobile: iOS, Android phones and tablets
  • TV: Smart TVs (Samsung, LG, Sony, etc.)
  • Streaming: Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Chromecast
  • Gaming: PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series
  • Computer: Web browser at max.com

Tips for Sharing

#### Within a Household

  • Create individual profiles for each family member
  • Each profile gets personalized recommendations
  • Kids' profiles have content restrictions

#### Maximizing Your Streams
  • Download content for offline viewing (saves a stream)
  • Coordinate viewing times with family
  • Consider Ultimate plan for larger households

What Happens If You Hit the Limit

If too many people try to stream:
1. The newest device gets an error message
2. Message says something like "Too many devices streaming"
3. Someone has to stop watching for the new person to start

Resolution:

  • Ask household members who's watching
  • Check if a device was left playing somewhere
  • Sign out of all devices (nuclear option)

Sharing Outside Your Household

Important: Max's Terms of Service limit account sharing to your household. Sharing passwords with people who don't live with you may result in account restrictions.

Recent industry changes have seen streaming services cracking down on password sharing, so keep this in mind.

Account Security

To protect your account:

  • Use a strong, unique password
  • Enable two-factor authentication if available
  • Regularly check Devices in your account settings
  • Sign out devices you don't recognize

Which Plan Should You Choose?

  • Living alone: With Ads or Ad-Free (2 streams is plenty)
  • Couple: Ad-Free (2 streams covers you)
  • Family of 3-4: Ultimate (4 streams = no fighting)
  • Larger household: Might need to coordinate or consider two accounts
