True Detective is an American anthology crime drama created by Nic Pizzolatto and aired on HBO. Each season features a self-contained narrative with new characters and settings. The first season follows Louisiana State Police detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart as they investigate a ritualistic serial killer over a 17-year period, exploring their complicated personal lives and the interplay between law, morality, and human darkness. The second season shifts to California, centering on three detectives and a criminal-turned-businessman as they unravel a web of corruption and crime following the murder of a politician. The third season is set in the Ozarks and revolves around Arkansas State Police detectives investigating the disappearance of two children across three timelines, delving into themes of memory and trauma. The forthcoming fifth season, titled Night Country, is set in Alaska and will follow two detectives investigating the mysterious disappearance of eight men from a research station.
